When custom isn’t needed: Stock hydraulic cylinders

Not every application requires a custom hydraulic cylinder. If you are able to fit a standard, off-the-shelf cylinder into your application, then you’ll save time and money.

By taking advantage of efficiencies gained by manufacturing in large quantities, the cost is significantly less than the cost of a custom-made cylinder.

We’ve partnered with Cheetah Hydraulics, a supplier who maintains deep hydraulic cylinder stock in the most common styles and sizes. All are made to respected quality standards.

What Is the Most Commonly Used Hydraulic Cylinder?

Double-action hydraulic cylinders are the most common style of stock hydraulic cylinders, in which the piston moves loads in either direction. The design of the cylinder includes two ports through which hydraulic fluid flows both in and out of the cylinder, controlled by a valve. This style is widely used in vehicles and is widely stocked.

Single acting hydraulic cylinders, which move a load in only one direction (and require gravity or a spring to return the cylinder to the starting position) are also easy to buy from stock.

Note that with a standard cylinder, the size and locations of the ports cannot be changed, nor are special finishes and seals available on the cylinder.

What Is the Standard Hydraulic Cylinder Bore?

The bore size, or inside diameter of a stock hydraulic cylinder, determines the amount of force the cylinder produces. Force equals the system pressure (typically 3000 PSI) multiplied by the surface area of the piston. Typical bore sizes range from 1-inch to 6-inches and are heavily stocked. Standard size increments include 1-inch, 1.5 inch, 2-inch, 2.5-inch, etc.

The length that the piston rod travels is its stroke. In hydraulic cylinder stock, common cylinder strokes range between 6 and 16 inches in 2-inch increments and also 24, 30, and 36 inches.

Standard Cylinders Available Fast from Stock

If a standard stroke and bore size will work in your application, and if you don’t need a customized cylinder design, then a stock hydraulic cylinder is right for you. Visit cheetahhydraulics.com to see a wide selection available for fast delivery.
